Welcome to Country

Ernie Dingo and Richard Walley wrote "Welcome to Country", as part of a comedy act in Western Australia, the 1970's

[Verse]

Back in the '70s, under Western skies,

Two mates with a spark, no script to disguise.

Ernie and Richard, with laughter in hand,

A moment was born, unplanned but grand.

[Verse 2]

Dignitaries gathered, from islands and seas,

No one had asked, but they planted the seed.

A gesture of honor, a heartfelt embrace,

Welcome to Country found its place.

[Chorus]

Welcome to Country, a bridge in the air,

A hand outstretched, a moment to share.

From comedy's heart, a tradition would grow,

A welcome for all, wherever they go.

[Verse 3]

No stage too small, no crowd too elite,

They spoke from the heart, their words took the lead.

What started in jest, now a custom divine,

Born of respect, it stands through time.

[Bridge]

It wasn't scripted, it wasn't a plan,

Just two friends speaking, man to man.

But those words lingered, took root and stayed,

A gift to the future, a bond they made.

[Chorus]

Welcome to Country, a bridge in the air,

A hand outstretched, a moment to share.

From comedy's heart, a tradition would grow,

A welcome for all, wherever they go.
